Formaldehyde– a dangerous chemical

Many biological supply companies have introduced an 'alternative' process for preserving dead animals that is formaldehyde-free. Apparently the animals are now embalmed with an alcohol based solution that is supposedly non-toxic.

However, other companies still sell dead animals that have been embalmed with formaldehyde to schools.

According to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine “Formaldehyde is a chemical preservative linked to cancer of the throat, lungs, and nasal passages. Formaldehyde can also damage the eyes, cause asthma attacks and bronchitis, and severely irritate the skin. So far, people can only speculate how inhaling and touching formaldehyde affects the long-term health of students and teachers.”

Regardless of whether animals are embalmed with formaldehyde or alcohol - dissection sucks!!!

Dissection gets DISSED!

Many students just like you are choosing to refuse animal and insect dissections because they don’t want to be part of the cruelty. As a result several organizations, websites, books, and other resources are available to support your choice. Visit our choices page for more info!

No matter how you slice it, dissection just doesn't cut it!
